my current event is how obama is accusing the republicans of fear mongering. he thinks they are going to use the fear vote to win the mid-term elections. he is fighting this with his efforts to get the youth that elected him to vote for the dems in november.

this impacts society because if obamas ideas work then our system will be largly democratic. if the republicans get by with the fear largly nothing good or bad will get done. hopefully nothing gets screwed up to bad.

My current event is about Obama rallying young supporters for November elections. He gave a pep talk at George Washington University, and answered questions submitted online. He gave campaign tips on how to make voting easier and making the choices between parties more clear.

He made an impact on society, mostly on the young voters watching. He made them feel important and said we need everyone to vote. Society needs leaders. Who better to help choose that leader than yourself?

My current event is called "I Want My MTV". Obama is using channels young voters watch like MTV, BET, and CMT to host a town hall where people can tweet and email in questions to ask him. He knows he needs the young people's votes and they take the most time and effort to turn out. It also is harder and more expensive so that is why he is the one targeting the youth.

I think it is a good idea to target young people this way. It makes it seem less boring than watching other political things, and also they can ask him things they care about. Also we have seen how much our country has changed by having Obama as our president and it effects our youth.

Obama call wednesday for Congress to extend the tax credit that helped soften the blow of college tuition for more than 12 million students last year. The Tax Credit program will cost $58 billion over a decade. "[Obama] blieves that it is importantfor this to be extended amd for families to hve the certainty and confidence that this will be there when they are making the choices about sending their children to college.

I think this is a good thing, because collge is very expensive and now days many families are stuggling to find the money to send their children to college.

The government says there will be no increase in Social Security benefits next year the second year in a row without an increase for more than 58 million retirees and disabled Americans. The Social Security Administration said Friday that inflation has been too low since the last increase in 2009 to warrant one for 2011. The announcement marks only the second year without an increase since automatic adjustments for inflation were adopted in 1975. The first year was this year.

it greatly effects society because it is our social security that is going down now and we wont be able to get very good security in the next few years because there is no money to spend on it

Lawyers for the South Dakota Republican Party have asked Attorney General Marty Jackley and U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson to investigate whether early-voting events sponsored by Democrats on three Indian reservations violate state law.The law prohibits anyone from offering anything of value in exchange for the votes.

I think that if this was true that our state democrats would have the upper hand over republicans and the state of South Dakota would be run by democrats because of law breaking democrats

My current event is about a women going to the presdident about bullying. A mother of an 11 year old boy from Georgia seeks the President for help after her son hung himself from being bullied. She wrote a letter to the president and will hold a news conference Friday to ask for help. Her son's case helped get an anti-bullying law passed in Georgia.

This event really impacts society. Bullying is a problem in many schools and it can lead to the death of a person if taken to far. This event will help get a law passed and change how things are at his school, Dunaire Elementary.

my current event is on Israel’s Plan to Build in East Jerusalem. jerusalem ended a construction freeze on jewish neighbohoods on friday. this has put peace talks on whether isreal will extend its constuction moratorium.

this shows that while isreals constuction plan is underway, since this current progect is not the main event, so to speak. it appears to be just a distraction from the real issues isreal is facing.

Masika Bermudez, the mother of an 11 year old, Jaheem Hererra,is holding a news conference on friday to ask for help form Obama to end school bullying in Georgia where she lives. Her son commit suicide in April as an escape from the bullying and she wants to spare other parents the pain she has felt. An anti-bullying law will go into effect in Georgia in 2011 that "pushes schools to aggressively investigate bullying incidents and provide counseling to victims". However she doesn't believe this is enough and that is why she's asking for Obama's help.

I strongly disagree with school bullying, but i think that passing that law will be enough in Georgia atleast. I think that the most Obama could do would be to get an anti-bullying law passed in all states.

My current event is called "Legal pot in California a big mistake." It talks about if we legalize marijuana for those who need it such as cancer patients, then what are we going to legalize next. The story mentions that a person can get it medically from a doctors note or they can just go to the liquor store.

I think that the marijuana should only be to those who need it such as medical patients. I do think that if we make marijuana legal for the whole country people will use it for the wrong reasons and that some other drug that is worse will be legalized in the future. I agree with both sides, but I think it should only be given to those who really need it if their doctor recommends it to them.

The current event i chose to talk about is called "NGOs Warned To Seek permission From Taliban." There has been many killings in the last few weeks in Afghanistan. Nongovernmental organizations are spreading the word to charity groups to ask permission of the taliban before entering the city, due to the high killing rates recently and they are on the upper scale. The taliban are targeting aid workers that are in charity groups.

This is the problem with countries not having any governments, all this rutheless killings and suicidal bombings is the outcome. People are thinking that they know how life should be in their country, but little do they understand, they are tearing everything apart. they look at The United States as a main enemy, but if they took time to understand us they would see what we are trying to do for them.

My current event is called "After a final day together, miners began to disband". All 33 miners were rescued on Wednesday from the collapsed mine and were took to the hospital to be checked out. On October 14th, 3 of the 33 miners were released from the hospital after spending 69 days together underground.

I think that it would have been really hard to spend 69 days underground and not see any sunlight. I think the worst part would of been not being able to take a shower and not really having anywhere to go to the bathroom. It would of also have been hard not to see your family and friends for 69 days.

My current event is called NATO Backs Taliban Talks: Sign of a shift in Afghan War? It is saying that the war could be shifting from warfare to plain settlement. The US and its allies have to open the door wider and think of more options. They are saying that the Afghanistan President wants to wind down rather than rachet up.

I don't know a lot about what's going on overseas, but to me this is good news. The war is still going on but the possibility that it is at its climax is becoming more and more believable. This, I think, will be good news to the rest of the US soldiers and its allies as we have faced enough destruction of troops.

Cop Fired For Sending Naked Pictures Appeals Termination
LOUISVILLE, Ky.
A 7 yr LMPD vetern has been caught sending nude, and partially nude pics of himself online, also looking at nude pics, and engaging in sexual acts sometimes at work. The police officer is now appealing the termination. Even though he was suspended in earlier times for sending pics in his uniform and cop car.

I believe that he should not be allowed to ever be a cop, because if he would rather look at porn at work, he might as well just sit at home and do it. It shows society that our own system of law is messed up, and if they allow him to stay that will show society that it is acceptable to be doing that while at work.

My current event is about Michelle Obama. Yes, thats right, the presidents wife. She was caught campaigning inside a polling place, which violates Illinois state law. The law that states this is as follows.. Illinois state law -- Sec. 17-29 (a) -- states: "No judge of election, pollwatcher, or other person shall, at any primary or election, do any electioneering or soliciting of votes or engage in any political discussion within any polling place [or] within 100 feet of any polling place." She clearly violated this..

This blatant law breaking can effect society by how people will vote. Votes could be swayed by Michelle standing there saying, "vote for this person" and that is not okay. The Obamas, and almost all democrats for that matter, love to cry wolf against Republicans breaking laws, yet when they do it, its okay. This is wrong, plain and simple.

I think it had an immensely good impact. Finally something completly positive has happened!!!! We needed that.

http://www.aolnews.com/money/article/from-bad-to-worse-a-primer-on-the-foreclosure-crisis/19674475

The rise in foreclorsures from banks and mortgage-servicing industys is becoming greator and greator. Foreclosures were incresasing by 4% each quarter of the year in 2009, but now they have slightly slowed. The US forclosers are now lower by 1% than 2009. Alot of these problems have been caused by credit lenders and not reading all the details of signed agreements.

In our society this means alot of financial problems. There all bills going to the Obama administration, but they could possilby prevent valid foreclosures. This crisis can't just fix itself overnight, and people continually have to purshase things. We as Americans although, need to save, invest, and use our money wisely.

Zero-Tolerance Laws Eased,
But Schools Still Crack Down
By Karen Schwartz | AOL News
There is a fine line between protecting children in schools and over-the-top enforcement of regulations. Samuel Burgos was expelled after he brought a plastic toy gun to school. A hearing officer upheld the decision and the child has been out of school for almost a year.

I believe this current event is a good demonstration of how certain laws can be a good thing. But they can also be a bad thing, if they are taken too literally. Laws are good, but they can't be taken out of context and over used.

Website: http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/10/15/ecuador.trapped.miners/index.html

Title: Workers scurry to reach four trapped miners in Ecuador

Rescue workers searched Friday for four miners believed trapped in a collapsed mine in southern Ecuador. The minors have been down there since 3am. They are said to be down 500 ft(150 meters). The rescue workers wanted to try and get them out within a day. They said that the minors should be able to have enough oxygen for five or six days. At least 50 rescuers were working Friday afternoon to try to free the four minors.

This impacts the families of the four minors in Ecuador because if the minors didn't get rescued in the five or six day period who knows what would happen its possible that they never would know if their loved ones are dead, alive, or injured. I'am just saying that i feel for those familes that have to go through troubles like these and I'am sure they are not fun to go through either. I just feel that those families have been impacted majorly with having thier loved ones stuck in that 500 foot hole.

It's a typical busy summer night at Banken, the most popular nightclub in Kristianstad, Sweden. The patio outside is uncomfortably crowded and breathing room is hard to come by. Nearly everyone at the club is holding some sort of drink and soon a group of teenagers by the bar begin taking body shots of tequila. Around 12:30 in the morning, throngs of cabs begin to line up along the sidewalk outside. Chances are that very few — if any people at all — drive home tonight. After all, this is Sweden, where the Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) limit for drives is a stringently low .02 g/100 ml.

Compare that to America, where the BAC limit remains at a practically libertine .08. How much is that exactly? According University of Oklahoma Police Department's BAC Calculator, a 180-lb male registers a .08 after consuming six 12 oz. beers or five gin-and-tonics in a span of two hours. Still, having the .08 standard is a legislative improvement. In previous years some states had their limit set at .15. That would be more than eight beers within two hours. Most European nations carry a standard of .05 or lower and a few countries, such as the Czech Republic, have zero tolerance policies.
I think maybe if our number was lower it would help or even stop drunk drivers. It would probabley help in the fact that less people would take a chance in driving over the limit and getting caught!

My current event is that the Stephanie Herseth Sandlin campaign and democratic party are offering food for votes. They are doing this on reservations like Pine Ridge, Lower Brule and Fort Thompson. The article states that "the law does not allow a person, political party, or any other entity to offer any item of value in exchange for voting."

This shows that the Herseth Sandlin campaign and the democratic party are losing their ethics and values and have been spooked. They are trying to bribe South Dakotans with food just to get a vote.

This is affecting society because waterways have been free from ice and the hottest temperature in Los Angeles was recorded this year at 113F.

My current event was called, Chile miners: From world fame to humble homes. All 33 miners were rescued and welcomed home. They are getting money offers to tell about their story. But the miners have made pact to tell very little about their 69 days trapped underground. They are also negotiating movie and book rights. Riches may come, but for now, many face an uncomfortable present: improvised homes, some have strained relationships with their families, and all face a search for work since the mine that employed them has filed for bankruptcy.

This story effects society because everyone want to know what it was like for them and what they had to go through. I am sure most of society is happy that they were rescued and wish them the best with their lives. And we will all be waiting to here more about their journey underground.

Obama is like a Chilean miner, Harry Reid says. Obama claims that after peplacing George W. Bush in the white house, he was left in a large hole. A hole so deep that he couldn't see out of it.First of all the miners were not in a hole, they were trapped under ground. Harry Reid says that being the man Obama is he just rolled up his sleeves and got to work.

I dont think that him claiming to be in a hole like the Chilean miners is going to do him any good, at least for the smart people. i think he is just trying to compare himself to the miners to make him self look good. Some people will think he is a hero like the miners for getting out of the hole. Others will just blow it off. He is just trying to get more people to belive that he can get us out of a hole, and well we will see because we sure are not out of it yet.

My current event is about how Governor Mike Rounds flyes from city to city to do the different duties his job entails. He says the cities are to far apart to drive. The flights use tax payers money which could be used on other, more important things.

This impacts society because that money could be used on things South Dakota needs, such as roads or funding for education. The government is always saying how straped for money the state is, so why should our Governer be able to use the large sum of money it takes to fly around when the money could be placed elsewhere?

Iran has accused Taghavi of passing $200 in cash to an Iranian man tied to Tondar. He won't be leaving until this upcoming week because of conditions attached to his release.
I don't think that was right of being held for two years. He was just taking the money to help someone. He has diabetes and was in poor health.

Six months after a BP-owned offshore oil rig exploded, setting off a violent leak 5,000 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, there is still much debate about what the United States has or hasn't learned from this disaster. As other issues -- like November elections and Chilean miner rescues -- dominate news cycles, there are also accusations that we've all turned a blind eye to the nagging problems that caused such an enormous spill in the first place.

I think that It's very bad that everyone is just over looking the big picture with our country. Yes, there is many other things happening in our country, but I still believe that the bigger issues that were so important to everyone before and still take place should be important to everyone now as well. Especially something so serious that is causing harm to our oceans water and things that inhabit the areas.

If you have to keep bringing in your car for repairs, you may have ended up with a lemon. South Dakota's lemon law is designed to protect consumers when they buy a problem car.
If your new car is giving you constant problems, you may be able to file a claim with the South Dakota office of Consumer Protection.

I think this is a really good idea, because many people buy cars and then come to find out that their car was not all it was cracked up to be. Car dealers just say what they are told to say about a vehicle, and on occasion this may not be true, so it's best to have a plan B to get the car that you really need.

This is an article about how John Thune believes he wants to challenge Obama for his presidency in 2012. John Thune believes he has what it takes to be president and to "fix" our country the right way. The article states that Thune has been a rising candidate in the Republican Party since 2004. He has a shot to be our president in 2012.
Although this hasn't affected society yet, because right now it's just a story, if John Thune became our president it could greatly impact our country. For one we'd have a whole new man in charge which almost always means there's going to be change in the country. And also Thune has been representing South Dakota for a good part of his life so maybe he'd take that small state, small town approach to Washington D.C.
