California Whooping Cough Outbreak: Whooping cough has claimed it 10th victim in California and health officials say it is the worst outbreak in 60 years. 6,000 cases have been reported since January 1st. It is preventable and vaccinations help the spread of the disease.
This is impacting society, because if its in California it can spread to other states. It can be fatal, so why wouldn't you get the vaccine, especially for children.
Hot Air?: The Obama administration is taking credit for it's stimulus plan creating 50,000 on the wind farms in the US. 11 of the 44 wind farms were created during the Bush administration and 19 were made before the stimulus plan. They state that they created 50,000 jobs, but most are short-term jobs.
I don't think it's right of the Obama administration to take credit for something they didn't do. They could take credit for the part their stimulus plan actually created.

My current event is about how smartphones are picked over computers and TVs. Many americans now use smartphones as their basis to streaming the web in a simpler fashion by using apps. With certain apps users can even stream TV and movies straight to their phone. Also many users said that they just use their phone rather then getting up and turning on the TV or computer.
This increase is affecting our lives in the fact that the internet in itself is declining in use because everyone is using apps on their phones to do what they would on a computer. Another way is that we as a nation are becoming lazier and want everything right now and not have to wait for the computer to start up.
Now that feilds are clearing out, the lines at elevators are growing. In Beresford, farmers are waiting up to a hour and a half to unload their crops and at other elevators it could take longer.
This impacts society because more trucks and slow moving tractors are on the road which can cause accidents. Farmers are also not making much money a day as their trucks and tractors wait in line at the elevators.

My current event is about a 20 year old women becoming the top cop in a violent Mexican city. Marisol Valles Garcia says she is tired of everyone being afraid. She wants to achieve tranquility and security and she is willing to do whatever it takes to get there. She also recruited two other women to join her force. Marisol also says the people are accepting them very well.
Many people think women can not do the jobs men can and I feel it was very brave and courageous of her to step up to the job. I think this is going to help other women to stand up and do the jobs they want to do as well. Marisol is very young and she says this job is fearful but she is willing to take on the task.
I am starting to see another side of the War in Afghanistan. There have been reports that more and more soldiers are returning home from combat and have had relations with drug abuse, crimes and felonies, and suicides. The stress from being in combat for so long is taking its toll and the government needs to do something about it. Soldiers aren't allowed enough time inbetween deployments to recover. The most at risk soldiers are the younger ones who have to complete basic training, advanced individual training, and get familiar with their units all within a span of 2 years, and then get deployed where they have seen no live combat at all. The government definitely needs to find a solution to this problem.
This has an impact on society because the families of the soldiers are becoming more and more scared of what their loved one is going to be like when he/she comes back. Combat is a dreadful experience and it has a huge impact on soldiers when they come back and they aren't themselves a lot of the time. But the good news is that there are record high treatment clinics for the soldiers that are coming home.
An Iranian-American, Reza Taghavi, has been held captive in Evin, Iran's most nototious prison for nearly two and half years. He is expected to return Thursday evening and he has been there since May of 2008.Taghavi's lawyer, Pierre-Richard Prosper, has been negotiating his since September 2009, over a year. It took "three trips to Iran, meetings with Iranian officials in New York and Europe, and close to 300 e-mails with Iranian officials" to free him. Previously Taghavi had traveled to Iran frequently to see his family without trouble. Before leaving in April 2008, he was asked by his acquintence to bring $200 to a friend who was "down on his luck." Two weeks after handing over the money he was detained by Iranian authorities and the recipient was arrested for association with an anti-regime group.
If the war hasn't already convinced people not to travel to Iran or the surrounding areas than this will. If they are already, this will only make them more cautious. It could keep other Iranian-Americans from visiting their families and associating with people there.

French protesters take demo to Senate as lawmakers vote: People in France are starting riots because the retirement age might possibly move up to 62 years old when it use to be 60. In the past month over a million people contributed to these demonstrations on the street. The lower house of parliament has already past the vote by 329 to 233. Some high school students have also been skipping class to join into these demonstrations. More than 428 people have been arrested.
I think that raising the retirement age from 60 to 62 should not be a big deal. It is only two years more of work. It wont be that much of a difference. I think this retirement age thing should pass because of all these demonstrations that people are putting on even when it hasn't been fully into effect.
My current event is 10 infants dead in California whooping cough outbreak. They say this is the biggest outbreak of whopping cough in 60 years. So far this year 5,978 cases of whopping cough have been confirmed. Nine of the ten infants that died were under 8 weeks old which means they were to young to get the shot, so they caught it from family, friends, or at the daycare. Parents that have infants that are to young to get the shot should get it themselves, so that they don't get whopping cough and pass it on to their infant.
I think that this could be prevented if the parents would get the shot themselves and take their children in to get the shot if they are old enough. So then whopping cough won't spread as easy and infants wouldn't lose thier lifes.
My current event is called: For some, jobless benefits trump a job. Since the economy is weak and jobs are scarce people are finding it isnt worth it to even work. If they did work it would be part time or a low paying job that doesnt cover their expenses. About 8 million people are now collecting some form of unemployment aid. In some states they can get more unempolyment money then if they got a job, but they should always be looking for a job.
This impacts society because people can collect jobless benefits that pay them more then if they were to actually get a new different job. In some cases they could go back to school and get a degree, since they would have time to and then they may have a better chance in finding a new job.
Toyota has announces another massive recall.the lexus, highlander, avalonand other models have been recalled concerning brake fluid and fuel pump problems.no crashes or deaths have been conected to this problem but after the faulty brake recall they arent taking any chances
after Toyota's first recall it would seem like a case of bad luck to go through a second one.however if they are experiencing problems it would be good for the public safty to have a recall.

Marisol Valles Garcia was sworn in Wednesday to bring law and order to a town of about 8,500 that has been changed from a string of quiet farming communities into a lawless no man's land. Two rival gangs, the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels, have been battling for control of its single highway, a lucrative drug trafficking route along the Texas border.
it will affect this town very much, if she makes the crimes and illegal activity leave the town it will be a good change for the familys that still live there.
My current event is titled "Toxic Spill in Hungary Kills 8"
At a local aluminum factory in Hungary, there was a reservoir holding 200 million gallons of bauxite which is the byproduct of the conversion of the aluminum metatls chemical reaction. 3 local villiages were covered with the sludge, injuring many people and killing 8. The sludge burns skin on contact. The managing director of the company was arrested for possibly knowing the reservoir was weak and not doing anything about it.
My thoughts would be why in the world would you want to live anywhere near a factoy that had that much or even any toxic and hazardous material? I do feel bad for the people for many have lost ther homes and 8 so far have lost their lives. In the end what ever the cause was and who ever knew about the damaged reservoir will be taken to court and charged.
10 infants dead in California whooping cough outbreak
-Whooping cough (pertussis)has ended 10 peoples lives in California. This is the worst outbreak in 60 years according to officials. All of the deaths occurred in infants under the age of 3 months, and nine of them were younger than 8 weeks old, which means they were too young to have been vaccinated against this highly contagious bacterial disease.
-There are vaccines for this and if people would get it they would be protecting these infants. The vaccine doesn't protect your life and it may wear off with time but I feel that you are better off recieving the vaccine and not getting it along with protecting those around you from this highly contagious disease, rather that put everyone your around and yourself at risk of possibly contracting the disease.

My article is about the smoking ban. It talks about why those for the ban want it made illegal to smoke in bars, resturants etc. as well as why those who are against it feel the way they do. The people for it argue how bad second-hand smoke is for people. Those against it are mainly the business owners, saying that a ban goes against their freedoms to decide what can and cannot happen in their business if they own it.
This has a great impact on society. Everyone needs to be aware of the risks of smoking and second-hand smoke. I belive that ban is a great idea. Maybe in the long run it will help people to stop smoking,knowing its not allowed really in any public place. I agree with the freedoms thing, but why should familys have to question going to a resturant where their kids will be exposed to smoking.
In Washington, a federal judge will consider a government offer to settle with the American Indian farmers. They said the Agriculture Department discriminated against them for decades. The government and the plaintiffs both declined to disclose the terms of the would-be settlement ahead of hearing. In 1999, the lawsuit filed Indian farmers and ranchers had lost about $500 million because they were denied USDA loans.
This imapacts society because Indians should be treated the same amount as Americans. They need settlement too. That means that discrimination is still going on and it needs to change.
Should Nancy Pelosi stay or go? My current event is about speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi, and if she should run again or if she should retire. Nancy's points are down by 7 and she has the lowest approval rate of 29 percent since January 2007.
Impact of society is her part in the health care and stimulous package! She is attacked almost daily by democrats if her own party doesn't like her why would she stay.
Baby gear maker Graco is recalling about 2 million strollers after receiving reports of four infant strangulations in the strollers. The consumer product saftey commission, which announced the recall wednesday, said the infant strangulations occured between 2003 and 2005. CPSC says if a baby isnt strapped into the stroller, he or she slide through the opening between the stroler tray and the bottom of the seat-where the child can get stuck and be strangled.
The military will experiment with remote-control, unmanned helicopters to deliever supplies. The K-MAX can operates day or night. It will deliver up to 3,450 pounds of supplies up to four locations and hover 12,000 feet. The helicopter can stay aloft for 24 hours and go as high as 30,000. Thats 10,000 feet higher than conventional copters.
I think this is very good for the military because this may reduce the number of deaths. Also it can supply needs to many loctions because it can hold and go higher then conventional copters.
My current event is about "Gunbattles stir panic in Mexican border cities." In Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Mexican soldiers battled gunmen in two cities across the border from Texas on Wednesday. Two people where killed in the city of Ciudad Juarez which one was a National Guard soldier. The violence has risen this year in northeastern Mexico and amids to split between the Gulf and Zetas drug gangs.
My thoughts on the subject would be that we need to shut down the bored to Mexico for a couple of weeks, send the illegals back.We also need to get more support from the government to protect our home land from gangs coming across to America

Hyper-libertarian Facebook billionaire Peter Thiel's appalling plan to pay students to quit college.
The name pretty much explains the entire article. Peter Thiel's one of the billionaires that helped start the social network facebook. He believes in unapologetic selfishness and economic Darwinism. People say that his biggest hero is Gordon Gekko. It sounds like he places almost no value in education.
This impacts society because it is about the decrease in education. Not only are kids not finishing school, or going to college, but now we have people like Peter Thiel who are publicly speaking against kids getting an education. Education is very important for everyones future, but apparently not to this guy.
A Sioux Falls parent would like to see more dads get involved in their children's schools, so Thursday night, he and school administrators launched a new program to do just that. Jerry Hauff has two stepsons at Laura Wilder Elementary in Sioux Falls, and heard about the Watch D.O.G.S. program through a parent organization meeting. Hauff has been visiting his sons in school a lot lately, and would like to see more dads and father-figures in the classroom.
I think it is a pretty cool idea. I think it would really have a good effect on the children who do not have a stable father at home. And it is an amazing idea for anyone to volunteer to help out the school. :)

This Article is about how Kristi Noem was interviewed on the Sean Hannity show last night. She was interviewed because of her conservative views and family values. Hannity heard what a stir she is causing in South Dakota so, she was invited to speak on Fox news last night, Which is a national news program.
This impacts society because South Dakota is actually being looked at in the whole scheme of national politics. Also, people are starting to look past the fake, "I'm for you"statements by true politicians, when in reality, they aren't. I think most people want our represenatives to actually represent us, the people, and not just themselves or their parties ideas.
My current event is that "National Public Radio fired Fox News contributor Juan Williams on Wednesday after a Monday night appearance on the O'Reilly Factor in which Williams said that it makes him nervous to fly on airplanes with devout Muslims."
This shows how unaccepting National Public Radio, an incredibly liberal group, is of people who associate with Fox News at all. Juan Williams is a liberal too. As soon as Williams said something about a Muslim, he was fired. However, people on NPR have been attacking Christians and their morals, ethics, and ways of life for years and nothing has happened to them.
Recent reports say that Lotus, a british racecar maker, will be putting a spin on its new business production. They are planning to turn their sales toward the general public while using their basic knowledge of race cars. In previous years, the total number of cars they have sold to the public have not reached over 1,000. Although concepts have been created and rumors are sturring, the cars are not expected to be released to the public until 2014 with a base price of $55,000. It will be powered by a inline 4 making 320 horsepower... more than a trans am.
Cars are what we use in everyday life and recent there has been a crackdown on how effecient cars should be in the future to preserve the atmosphere.
Toyota on Thursday announced a global recall of 1.5 million vehicles, including approximately 740,000 in the U.S., to replace a defective brake master cylinder seal. The vehicles in the U.S. include the 2005-'06 Toyota Avalon, 2004-'06 Toyota Highlander non-hybrid model and Lexus RX 330, and 2006 Lexus GS 300, IS 250 and IS 350.
I think this will cause a decrese in buisiness for toyota. And it will also make buyers more aware of making sure that the car company they are buying from is reliable. I don't think this will slow the rate of car sales over all, just slow it down for toyota.
My current event is about the "Dont ask, Dont tell" policy. A federal court appealed the policy and temporarily blocked a lower court ruling that banned the enforcement of the policy. This blocking gave the governement the time they wanted to challenge the ruling of the policy.
Aubrey Sarvis, an Army veteran and executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, said the appeals court panel's ruling "means that 'don't ask, don't tell' is once again on the books, and is likely to be enforced by the Defense Department."
I personaly think that the "Dont ask, Dont tell" policy is wrong and a violation of rights given to you in the Bill of Rights. The policy, when enforced is stressful on soliders who are gay or lesbian. If you are found out, which happens in most cases you are given an Dishonorable Discharge. The very pressure of this and from other members in anyones unit is enough for almost anyone to crack.
I believe that anyone (be him or her, gay or lesbian, black or white, big or little) should be allowed to be in the United States Armed Forces. If somone is willing and able they should be allowed to join!
Just be thnakful that they want to join and save this wonderful country that we all live in. :)
The World Trade Center was left a $10,000 donation from a "mystery" donater. Tuesday Night, President of the National September 11 Memorial and Musem, Joe Daniels told the New York Post he found five 20 dollar bills and ninety-nine $100 bills in the donation box.
Most of it must have been given from the same man becuase there was a 2 hour time period from the first time is was check(5pm) and the when the found the money(7pm) I think this is an incredible amount of money donated. It must have came from someone with tons of money orignaly or some families of the victims put together $10k and had a single memeber bring donate it.
My article is about Greg Horan age 30 who was arrested for possesion of 2,000 Oxycontin pills. he was arrested before 11:30 after signing for a fed ex package containing childrens toys stuffed with the Oxycontin. he was released today on $79,000 bail.
this effects society because until november 19th he'll be free sell Oxycontin. so many kids could O.D. and die. at least 2,000 of those pills are off the streets.

In this story it explains how Toyota is recalling 1.53 million cars because of brake fluid and fuel pump problems. Most of the cars are being taken out of the United States and Japan. The remainder of the cars not in these two countries would be in Europe. This isn't the first time this year Toyota has had to recall cars, the number of recalls this year for Toyota is 10 million cars.
This impacts society because all of the dealers and private dealers of these cars now have to send them back and not be able to sell them. Also Toyota has been having troubles making quality cars this year as the article states they have had to recall more then 10 million cars. The Toyota car industry could start to decline as people think they don't create quality vehicles anymore.

In Paris, France a bill is trying to be passed to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62. As a result voting has become very chaotic and people are protesting in the streets. 4,00 people mostly students led a march but the march was mostly peaceful police reported. As a result although workers have gone on strike. There is not alot of violence, but protest.There are currently about 1,000 amendments to reform the bill.
This has been affecting the French society not only in the increase in the crisis of a increased retirement age, but street with populated intersections have had to be blocked off. Also becuase people aren't going to their jobs there is a fuel supply in France. The bill should be passed or declined betwwen this thursday to Sunday.
Idaho won't manage wolves under Endangered Species act
Wildlife managers on "monday to relinquish their duty to arrest poachers or even investigate when wolves a killed illegally." A federal judge in montana returned wolves to the Endangered Species Act protections. In august, Idaho and Mantana have had to cancel public hunts. States will have to manage wolves responsibly.
The wolves could end up on the Endangered species act againt. the wolves help the enverment. Peple dont under stand the wolves that i love very much.
Two Georgetown University students are among the three people arrested. Police said that lab was used to make DMT, a hallucinogenic drug.No injuries were reported after a nasty odor was reported at the dorm room. The chemicals that were used weren't at any health risks of the students in that dorm room.
I just wanted to say that doing drigs isn't a smart decision to make and it can effect the people around you and all i have to say about that is just make good choices with your life and don't ruin it by doing drugs.
A South Dakota State University student's death comes at the end of Hobo Days weekend in Brookings, SD. But university officials say Aaron Hohwieler's death can not be directly linked to any of homecoming events.
But police say the number of arrests connected to homecoming weekend at SDSU nearly doubled from last year.
According to the Brookings County Sheriff's department there were 16 DUI arrests and 23 drug arrests. There were 62 arrests in 2010, up from just 32 last year.
The Brookings County Sheriff says alcohol was a factor in nearly every arrest this past weekend.
This should make college kids think about how much they are drinking. Binge drinking is not good for you, and many kids make bad decisions when they are drunk. I think everyone should be smart, but also Brookings County cops should chill out and let college kids have fun.
Poll: What's wrong with Washington? It's the people in charge, not the system
Only 33 percent of Americans asked in a poll said they were optimistic about the American government. This is the lowest number compared to whenever else the poll was taken. Most people don't blame this on the system itself, but the people in power.
This impacts society because when it comes to election, since so many people are questioning who is running our country, they are going to change it. People want things to change in America for the better, and they think the only way to do that is to give someone else power.
A tsunami hit some western Indonesian islands. The tsunami was caused by an earthquake. The tsunami killed more than 100 people and hundreds more are missing.
This obviously greatly impacted their society. The tsunami destroyed many people houses, property, and spirits. Not only did this affect Indonesia, but it affected us as well. People that are related to them in the U.S. are greatly affected by their loss, or devestated by the destruction of their homeland.
